Bob Doll: Bob was Program Director and the first voice on WEKY as the station first went on the air in 1953. Bob's broadcasting carrier covered many years and stations. Bob owned and managed the Small Market Radio Newsletter for ten years. Bob also authored several books on small market radio including Sparks out of the Plowed Ground. Sadly Bob recently signed-off at his home in Seguin Texas.

O.C. Halyard: The original General Manager of the WEKY in 1953.O.C. was General Manager and EKU play by play man, came to WEKY from WVLK , Lexington. After leaving WEKY entered the real estate business in Orlando and was involved in securing a section of the property that would become Disney World.
Recently, Jim Kincer found an original business card of Mr. Halyards. Jim says, "Note the phone number "1340" no area code and prefix. When you magnify the card, it looks hand drawn and hand lettered, (very typical in those days)." Jim Kincer

Reed Anderson: First Chief Engineer for WEKY in 1953, He later built WCYN and was a part owner. Reed died cancer in the early 1960s.

Cavin Barnett: General Manager, came from WVLK, Lexington. Was very active in Community serving as GM for several years.

Donald J. Horton: Known as the guru of Kentucky radio after having assisted “financier” Garvis Kincaid establish a broadcasting group extending from Lexington to the Florida Keys, joined the staff as an adviser in the early 60’s.

John Sullivan: Now deceased, John was a long time employee of WEKY working in sales and as an announcer. John came to WEKY following a stint in the US Air Force. John, after earning his degree, joined the first staff of WEKU at Eastern Kentucky University, and later became a talk show host and special events reporter for WKYT TV, Lexington.

Ichabod Powell: Morning DJ for WEKY in the late 50s and early 60s .Icahbod hosted a Saturday program featuring his own band with wife (singer) Corrine.

Charlie Mastin: Charlie joined the staff while a student at Eastern State College, served as announcer, DJ, sales person and sports announcer. Later became play by play announcer of the Kentucky Central Radio Network (UK), and the first General Manager of the Kentucky Colonels Basketball team of the ABA. He worked for TV and Radio stations in Orlando, Florida where he was employed at the time of his death.

Don Stewart: DJ in the 1950s. No additional information.

Wayne Gregory: Wayne began as a DJ/announcer at age 15. A Richmond native, he attended the University of Kentucky where he served not only as editor of the Kentucky Kernel Newspaper, but as student manager of WUKY FM. He may have been the only person to have accomplished this. He returned to Richmond to work at WEKY before joining the staff of WEKU where he remained in several positions until his death.

K.P. Graham: Chief Engineer, came from WVLK, Lexington.

Bob Hauck: DJ. Worked at the station while a student at Eastern State College where he originally came to play football. Bob now owns broadcast property in Florida.

Jim Brown: DJ with a great voice and personality, a native of Somerset, who later owned operated WSFC AM/FM in that town until his death.

Sandra Gentry (Prewitt): Secretary/receptionist/office manager, later moved to Florida, currently resides in Richmond and Florida.

Ralph Gabbard: Ralph began his radio career at WEKY as a part time DJ, later becoming General Manager of WEKY after stints in Renfro Valley, Delaware, Ohio and Lexington at WVLK. He became sales manager, and then General Manager of WKYT TV, Lexington, KY. He served as a member of the NAB Board of Directors, as well as chairman of the NAB TV and CBS TV Boards. He along with Jim Host and Ralph Hacker established the University of Kentucky Network which has become the largest of it’s kind in the US. Known as a great innovator he built WKYT TV into one of the best stations in America.

Bob Spradlin: Joined the staff after graduating from UK College of Telecommunications, served rolls as salesperson, DJ, staff announcer, and play by play announcer. Later owned and operated stations in Berea and Mt. Sterling.

Mark Neeley: Mark worked week nights during his four years at Eastern State College, and weekends at WTLO Somerset. For many years Mark was the News Director/news anchor at WCKY in Cincinnati, Ohio, now retired from the Hamilton County School System where he served as Public Relations Director.

Dallas Riddell: Saturday host of a program featuring his band “The Kentucky Troubadours”.

Nelson Young: Saturday host of a program featuring is own band.

Joe Hacker: Saturday host of a program featuring his own band. Mr Hacker was the father of Ralph Hacker.

Jack Parrish: Jack was a sales person, formerly with WVLK Lexington.

Jerry Glazer: Jerry became a DJ/announcer while a student at Eastern State College, after graduation returned to Elizabethtown and worked for WIEL

George Wilcox: A Richmond native, George began his career as a DJ/announcer at WEKY following great success in local/state speech contest while a student at Madison Model. One of the greatest voices to ever speak into a WEKY microphone attend Vanderbilt University and worked part time for WLAC AM, Nashville before leaving the industry.

Dwight Goins: Dwight worked at WNKY with the Kincer family prior to coming to Eastern State College. Following graduation he returned to his home area of Neon, KY. ( I believe he became a teacher, not certain)

John Fox: John was the son of one time owner J. Franke Fox, came to WEKY after beginning his announcing career at WHLN, Harlan. His sister was Tinker, after whom the broadcast corporation was named.

J. Franke Fox: Was at one time the owner of WEKY. He also owned WHLN, Harlan in partnership with Jim Morgan. Among the people who Mr (s) Fox and Morgan gave a start was Cawood Ledford.

Al Weaver: Al came to WEKY from Knoxville, Tn. In his early career he worked with Country Comedian Archie Campbell, and was friends with many country stars including Patsy Cline. Weaver became General Manager as well as Eastern State College Play by Play announcer. He left the business to begin his own State Farm Insurance Agency and remained there until his retirement. He splits time between Richmond and Lake Okeechobee, Fl.

Jan Fisher: DJ/news announcer, Jan began work at WEKY while a student at Eastern State College. Later entered TV as a reporter and worked among other cities Gainesville, Fl.

Don Stuart: Don came to WEKY from WVLK and served as a DJ/announcer, following his stint in Richmond, returned to Lexington and then to Chicago.

Ron Statzer: Ron was from Whitsburg Kentucky and came to WEKY as a news reporter and DJ. With a great voice and talent. Ron also worked at WAKY in Louisville and also worked in Lexington TV. Ron departed Lexington for “The Tidewater” area of Virginia where he died tragically while doing a PM Magazine story on hang-gliding.

Dan Mason: Dan began career at WEKY while a student at Eastern Kentucky University. Dan then became a DJ at WVLK, then for a number of other stations prior to joining CBS Radio where he now serves as President. He is a member of the EKU Alumni Distinguished Hall Of Fame.

Woody Stiles: A native of Richmond, Woody attended Madison Central High School and started his radio career in Irvine for WIRV at the young age of 14. While still in school, Woody worked at WEKY as a DJ / Announcer. He was also an accomplished writer and pilot, putting both to work, as well as his announcing talents, while working at WAKY Louisville as a news reporter. He tragically lost his life while flying and pulling banners behind his plane for an event near Louisville.

Jim Lewis: a Richmond native, began working at WEKY while a high school student, blessed with great talent, Jim lost his life in an accident while in his early 20’s.

Tyler Cox: While attending EKU, Tyler started his long broadcasting career working part-time at WEKY. Tyler also worked for Richmond's other station WCBR. In 1972 he was hired full time at WEKY. Tyler also worked for WVLK in Lexington and 10 years at the old WAVE Radio in Louisville, then to WRNL WRXL Richmond, VA; KFBK Sacramento where he served as Rush Limbaugh’s PD. Tyler also worked for WBZ Boston and WWRC Washington, DC. Tyler is now in Dallas/Fort Worth market where he has worked for 18 years and is now on his second tour of duty as PD at WBAP. Tyler's oldest son has caught the radio bug, and is the morning guy at an AC station in Brownwood, Texas. Note: See Tyler's comments on the WEKY Info Page.

Terry Rice: Worked the over-night shift for WEKY in 69 and 70. Terry later came back to work again. Note: See Terry's comments on the WEKY Info Page and the Comments Page.

Ike Smith: Ike worked at WIRV in 1969/70 while at EKU, then went to WVLK, WLAP, WAKY and WKLO. Ike also worked weekends... then overnights at WEKY in 1968 as "Colonel Ike's All Night Music Machine"...played Top 40 from Midnight to three and country from three to six. Ron Boone was P.D. at that time.

Robert Hanger: Robert worked for WEKY in 1955. He started in radio at WDNE in Elkins, West Virginia in1953, as DJ/ announcer; then went to WCHO in Washington Court House,Ohio; then to WDYK, Cumberland, MD; and then to to WWKY, Winchester, KY; followed by WEKY, Richmond, KY. Robert spent 3 years in TV and a total of 21 in the Broadcast Industry. He is now retired and now lives in San Angelo Texas. Read more about Robert and his time in Richmond on the WEKY Info Page.

Don Stocker: Don worked for WEKY, WKXO, WLAP and other area stations in the 70s. Don, who is from Madison County, is now in business for himself doing computer security work for banks and other businesses in Kentucky. Don recently sent us an Air-Check from the 70s. Click here to listen.
